Last Friday, Giants reliever Ramon Ramirez plunked Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino, and then things got a little testy. Victorino began walking toward the mound to address Ramirez, and Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco began charging as well before Giants catcher Eli Whiteside confronted him. Benches for both sides began to clear, and Victorino had to be physically restrained from attacking any of his opponents.

Now according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Victorino (three games) will be the only player suspended for the event while Ramirez, Polanco and Whiteside will all be fined. Ramirez and Whiteside both were surprised that they weren’t told to sit for a game or two.

“I really believed I was the one who was going to be suspended,” said Ramirez via a translator. “It’s a surprise. I was waiting for a suspension, at least a day.”

Said Whiteside, “”I might have looked a little crazy jumping around out there. I didn’t throw any punches. I didn’t hit anybody. My intention was to protect my pitcher. I’m happy with the outcome.”

Victorino has appealed his three-game suspension, according to the Chronicle.
